Acquiring the Skills for Your Dream Job

By: Kandice Thorn

It's the classic job seeker's paradox: you can't get a job without experience; you can't get experience without a job.  This is not just a problem for students or recent graduates who are looking for their first "real" jobs; it can also be an issue for anyone seeking to change practice area or jurisdiction.  It can seem like the cards are stacked against you right from the start, so what is a job seeker to do?

One of the best strategies I have heard of for combating this is to start with the position and work backward.  Begin by identifying ten job postings for positions you would be interested in.  Look at those job postings and make a list of 5-10 skills or competencies required for the positions.  Then come up with strategies for acquiring the necessary skills - perhaps by taking a clinical or externship course, writing a blog, or volunteering.  Of course, you must then execute those strategies.

There are several benefits to this approach.  First, and most obviously, you will build the necessary skills for the position you desire.  Second, you will create opportunities for yourself in your area of focus; you will slowly turn yourself into an expert and that will be reflected in your resume.  Finally, you will find that you naturally build your reputation and make valuable contacts that can help you later on.

This is a great way of taking control of your job search and creating your own opportunities.
