For students who are
returning in the spring, here are some ideas for steps you can take during your
break to get a jump on the spring semester job search:
1. Read all the GPDP Mini-Guides cover to cover (the guides that have not yet been posted are in process and should be up very soon!).
2. Perfect your resumes/cover letters. Use the advice
in the Mini-Guides, including the sample documents in the appendices, and past blog entries that address resume or cover letter
preparation. If you are not a native
English speaker, enlist the help of a friend who is a native English speaker to make sure your grammar and usage are absolutely perfect.
3. Attend networking events. If any bar associations or other organizations
are holding events over the holiday season, make an effort to attend them and
talk to other people.
4. Enlist friends and relatives to help you
practice your interviewing skills. Use
the sample questions in the Interviewing for LL.M. Students Mini-Guide and practice your answers. The more you practice aloud, the more
comfortable you will become. This is especially important if you have an ISIP interview coming up in January.
5. Get in touch with potential networking
contacts. The holidays are a good time
to reach out to your contacts to wish them well. Also, work on expanding your list of
networking contacts. Friends and family
may be able to help you identify additional networking contacts.
6. Relax. Enjoy time with family and friends. The spring semester is going to be a crazy time, so take some time for yourself and come back refreshed for the new term.
