What to Bring (and NOT to Bring) to a Job Interview: A Checklist

By: Kandice Thorn

Keep this checklist handy and refer to it whenever you have a job interview.

Before you head out the door for that job interview, make sure you have the following items in hand:

  • Resumes. At least one copy for each person who will interview you, printed on quality resume paper.
  • Transcripts. Two copies of each transcript, including your Fordham LL.M. studies, as well as your first degree in law and any other degree programs you have completed. Unofficial transcripts are fine, and these can be printed on regular copy paper.
  • References. Two copies of your list of 2-3 references (can be printed on regular copy paper).
  • Writing sample. Two copies of your legal writing sample (can be printed on regular copy paper).
  • Breath mints or gum. This is for BEFORE you go into the interview. You shouldn't have these in your mouth when you arrive!
  • An extra pair of pantyhose. For women, if you are wearing a skirt suit. You'll be glad you have them if they get snagged on the subway!
  • The address of the organization and the name of your contact, along with directions or a map if you've never been there before. Use HopStop (http://www.hopstop.com) to get directions using public transportation.
  • Your cell phone. In case of emergencies, you should carry your cell phone, but please--for heaven's sake--turn it off before heading into the interview. Don't put it on silent or vibrate, turn it all the way off!
  • Print outs of your research of the organization. This is for you to review BEFORE the interview. Keep them out of sight once you arrive at the interview.

You should carry all your documents in a professional-looking folder or folio. A briefcase or handbag large enough to hold your documents will work for carrying everything, but do not bring more than one bag (i.e., ladies, do not bring a briefcase AND a purse). When someone reaches out to shake your hand, you do not want to be juggling multiple bags.

Leave the following items at home:
  • Laptops. I know we are all glued to our computers these days, but just this once, please leave it at home!
  • Backpacks. Backpacks generally do not look very professional.
