Over the years that I have worked with international students and non-native English speakers, I have noticed over and over again people using the words like "wanna" and "gonna" in their email correspondence. This phenomenon has confounded me for a while, so I decided recently to do some digging to see why so many international students use these words.
In a brief Google search, I found several videos or articles saying that using and understanding "wanna" or "gonna" will make you a better and more fluid English speaker. This may be true - we certainly do use these words frequently in our spoken words and incorporating them into your speech will may make your spoken English sound more natural and more fluent.
However, what these teachers fail to mention is that native English speakers virtually never use these words in written English. So, while using them in your speech may make you sound more fluent, using them in your writing will actually make you sound less fluent.
Thus, if you are looking to improve your English fluency, it is important to be sure to use those words only in your speech, not in your writing.
